Today we started with our first overnight hike. We woke up at 6 AM and were gone by 7. On the 1,5 hour drive we sang along with a Christmas playlist, so when we arrived we had our (Christmas) spirit high. We decided to not spend $105 on a watertaxi and instead walk around Lake Rotoiti. This added 3 hours to our already 4,5 hour walk. In hindsight this might have been a bit too much with our heavy backpacks. This caused us to not appreciate the nature as much as we had liked to. However, we did it! 7,5 hours later we arrived at the John Tait Hut where we could finally take off the bags and immediately went K.O. on our mattresses. After our beauty nap we decided to ‘cook’ (aka; add boiled water to our freeze dried food) and in the evening we played some cardgames with other trampers. At 9:30 PM it was time to go to bed.
At 9 AM we went to do the same track again, but this time the other way around and with a whole different attitude. We knew what were up against and decided to take it a bit slower. We finally looked around and took pictures of everything! The snowy mountains, the forest, the rippling river, the swingbridges, the fields and the long wavy grass. We were back at the car before we knew it. That evening we were exhausted and went to bed early.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIRIAM!!! We had some fun things planned for today. Starting with a nice breakfast à la Mirte, a lot of congratulations and gifts. In the afternoon we went to the city centre to have lunch at Morrisson Café. Miriam wore her beautiful pink birthday sash and got a lot of great responses. After the lunch we took a dive in the sea and ate heavenly homemade Dutch apple pie. For dinner we made special pancakes and the moment we finished eating, we left to go to the movies. When we purchased our tickets we even got a birthday discount! The movie: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, was amazing! The best ending of this day.
We used our morning to pack our stuff and arrange some last things before we went on to the backpackers in Blenheim. The plan is to work in a vineyard and the backpackers has a ‘stay and work’ policy. The moment we arrived we met some cool people, we spent our afternoon and evening with.
Yesterday we made a deal to cook and eat with the four Germans we met. The preparations took some time, but in the end we loved it! We celebrated New Years Eve in the local club and even bumped into some old friends from Taupo! We had an amazing time.
The weather wasn’t great these days, so our plans to go to the beach failed. Instead we stayed in, played a lot of card games, watched movies, played games on the PS and just filled our time.
Love Miriam & Mirte
